India has suffered a major setback in the latest rankings released by the ICC on 1 May. The number 1 crown has been snatched from India in the Test rankings and Australia has captured the top. Team India was number 1 in Tests since October 2016 but has now slipped to the third position in the rankings. India has suffered the brunt of losing the 2–0 Test series against hosts New Zealand.

Australia become number in ICC Test rankings

Australia has now reached number 116 in the Test rankings, while New Zealand has finished second with 115 points. The Indian team, which slipped to number three, now has 114 points. This is the first time since the launch of Test rankings in 2003 when there is such a small gap between the top 3 teams.

According to the ICC statement, India has lost its place because its record of 12 Test wins and one Test loss in 2016-17 were removed from the latest rankings. Virat Kohli’s team had won all five of its series at that time, including the series against Australia and England.

On the other hand, Australia lost to both South Africa and India during this period. In this latest update, 100 percent of all matches played after May 2019 and 50 percent rating of the last two years have been added.

Australia also becomes No.1 in T20 and England remains number 1 in ODI

Talking about the ODI rankings, world champions England (127) is in the first place while India (119) remains in second place. New Zealand is in third place with 116 points. South Africa and Australia are at numbers four and 5 respectively.
