IPL 2022 group format all you need to know

The first match of the 15th season of IPL will be played on March 26. This year IPL is going to be played in group format with 10 teams, so this year it is going be different from previous seasons.

Previously only once ten teams have played in a single season and that too back in 2011 and after that for two years 9 teams played in 2012 and 2013. But after that only 8 teams tournament has been played.

IPL 2022 is going to be played in group format as it was played in IPL 2011. Accordingly, teams are categorized in 2 groups of 5 teams. Groups in IPL 2022 are as follows-

Group-A : Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants.

Group-B : Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujrat Titans.

Group A Group B
MI CSK
KKR SRH
RR RCB
DC PBKS
LSG GT

As per format, each team will play 2 matches against each team in same group and one match against each team in other group and one extra match against the same row team in other group.

For example, Mumbai Indians will play 2 matches against each team in Group A and with this it will one match against all teams in Group B and with this it will also play 1 extra match against Chennai Super Kings as it is in same row. So in this way Mumbai Indian will play 2 matches against Chennai Super Kings and only 1 match against all other team of Group B.

In IPL 2022 a total of 70 league matches will be played in Mumbai and Pune only due to Covid situation and for that four venues have been selected. Wankhede Stadium, DY Patil Stadium, Brabourne Stadium and MCA International Stadium are selected as the venues to host the full season of IPL 2022.
